Commerzbank scored above average compared to its peers in the 2019 Banks sub-sector assessment. Commerzbank achieved the highest possible score on four out of seven criteria, placing it above the sector and national average, according to FTSE Russell: "Climate change", "Labour standards", "Corporate governance" and "Anti-corruption".

The index consists of the most sustainable companies within the three indices DAX, MDAX and TecDAX. These are first checked for exclusion criteria such as violations of the principles of the UN Global Compact and activities in certain business areas. In a second step, the ranking is based not only on market capitalisation and stock market value but also on the rating by the sustainability rating agency Sustainalytics. The 50 best companies resulting from this are summarised in the DAX 50 ESG Index.

Method

The analysis of the banks by WWF and its partner NKI is based on a detailed questionnaire, which is pre-filled based onpublicly available information and then supplemented by in-depth workshops with representatives of the bank. Thematically, the questionnaire covers sustainability issues in all areas of management and core business. As in the previous year, the benchmark for the evaluation is based on eight criteria, which - according to WWF - must be implemented by banks in order to actively accompany the transformation of the economy and society and, which thus characterise the "sustainable bank 2025".

Results

In the final rating, in which the 15 banks are classified into five categories, again none of the banks reached the highest category - neither in private nor in corporate banking. However, Commerzbank is considered a "frontrunner" in Corporate Banking, along with seven other banks. In Private Banking, we are in the "runner-up" category together with four other banks.

With its rating as a "pioneer" in corporate banking, Commerzbank improves by one category compared to last year. Here, the WWF gives a particularly positive assessment of the definition and publication of clear guidelines with exclusion criteria and financing conditions for industries whose processes and products are associated with negative impacts on the environment and climate. In addition, the climate and sustainability-related criteria in the lending process and the various financing offers with an environmental and climate-related focus are to be classified as "up-to-date". In Private Banking, Commerzbank is rated as "runner-up", which is the third highest category. Here, too, the WWF considers Commerzbank's corporate governance to be contemporary in terms of sustainability. The anchoring of sustainability in the corporate program Sustainability 360°, the large number of participations in industry initiatives and associations, the developed Sustainable Finance Framework and the comprehensive and high-quality reporting on Commerzbank's sustainability-related commitment are also highlighted.
